because Australia is so close to all the other islands like Philippines etc, a lot of our furniture/home wares are made in these places, best exemplified by the furniture from hermon and hermon, in my opinion one of the top 5 best furniture shops here. A lot of their stuff is made from natural "islandy" materials like palm leaves, coconut husks, rattan etc. this appeals to me a lot as i grew up with this stuff in fiji.
